TESAMORELIN

WHAT IS TESAMORELIN

Tesamorelin injection are formulated to decrease the amount of extra fat in the stomach area in adults who have lipodystrophy (increased body fat in certain areas of the body). It was FDA approved to be used in patients with HIV and is now being used for other reasons. Tesamorelin is in a class of medications called human growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF) analogs and works primarily by increasing the production of a certain natural substance that can decrease the amount of body fat.

HOW IS TESAMORELIN USED

Tesamorelin is made in the USA and dispensed form FDA Compounding Pharmacies. It is available in a lyophilized form, a powder , that is mixed with a reconstitution liquid and injected SQ or IM.

A typical dose is given daily in a different area for each injection to help prevent bruising and irritation. Keep track of the areas where you inject tesamorelin.

SIDE EFFECTS OF TESAMORELIN

There are little to no side-effects to using Tesamorelin. If any, side effecgts are minor and may cause the following:

  • swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • Flushing in about 30% of patients w/first injection, could be every time
  • pain or numbness in the hands or wrists
  • tingling, numbness, or pricking sensation
  • redness, itching, pain, bruising, bleeding, or swelling at the site of the injection
  • itching and/or hives
  • joint pain
  • pain in the arms or legs
  • muscle aches, stiffness, or spasms
  • vomiting
  • night sweats
  • difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep

Any and all side effects should be reported to your physician. Major side effects require notification of the provider and discontinuation of the drug:

  • allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
  • chest pain or chest tightness
  • increased hunger or thirst
  • increased urination
  • palpitations
  • unusually weak or tired

CONTRAINDICATIONS OF TESAMORELIN

  • Tesamorelin should not be prescribed for patients with a history of any form of cancer
  • any allergy to tesamorelin

TESAMORELIN DRUG INTERACTIONS

Medication such as cortisone, prednisone, ritonavir, simvastatin, birth control pills, diabetes medication should be used with caution with Tesamorelin. Action of these and other medication may be increased or decreased when used together.
